CMT Research Foundation

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a progressive degenerative condition affecting the peripheral nerves that extend from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body, such as the arms, hands, legs, and feet. This disorder, named after its discoverers - doctors Jean-Marie Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth - disrupts the communication between the brain and nerves. In CMT, the motor nerves controlling muscle movement and sensory nerves responsible for transmitting sensory information struggle to relay signals effectively, leading to symptoms like numbness, sensory loss, muscle weakness, and nerve degeneration. Over time, muscle weakness and deterioration occur. Symptoms can manifest from birth or in adulthood, worsening gradually. Unfortunately, there are currently no treatments or cures for CMT.
